eThekwini Municipality added its Disaster Management WhatsApp chatbot to the municipal news page on 2 November 2026. The service was launched on 30 October; Civic Ledger published this report on 4 November.

The City says residents can use the chatbot to report incidents in real time, receive safety information and contact Disaster Management services directly. It is available in English and isiZulu.

Municipal statements present the platform as a tool for faster reporting, early warning and emergency response during floods, severe storms and fires. Those are stated objectives: the reviewed records provide no response-time data, usage figures, service-level commitment or independent evaluation of the system.

The launch statement directs residents to a QR code on an accompanying poster. The text reviewed does not publish a WhatsApp number or a separate service URL. It also discloses no development or operating cost, supplier, contract term, tender reference, data-retention policy or privacy assessment.

What it means

The chatbot creates another reporting channel for residents, but its public value and governance safeguards cannot yet be assessed without procurement, performance and data-management records.
