eThekwini Municipality says it dismissed seven employees for misconduct relating to diesel theft between October 2025 and September 2026. The municipal statement was published on 28 October 2026; Civic Ledger published this brief on 30 October.

Four of the seven dismissals occurred in August 2026. The City says two of the dismissed employees used fabricated requisitions to draw fuel from municipal filling stations for more than a year.

The municipality describes the resulting loss only as running into millions of rand. It did not publish an exact amount, the volume of fuel involved, disciplinary-case numbers, the employees' units or positions, or details of any linked criminal cases.

The City says further disciplinary proceedings are under way. Other matters under investigation concern alleged theft of asphalt, vehicle parts and stationery, alleged illegal sales of refuse bags and alleged unauthorised use of municipal vehicles. These are allegations under investigation, not findings against named people.

What it means

The dismissals are a disclosed consequence-management outcome involving municipal resources, but the public record is too limited to quantify the loss or connect the disciplinary findings to criminal prosecutions.
