eThekwini Municipality says the 2026 KwaZulu-Natal Investment Conference, held in Durban from 13 to 16 October alongside South African Auto Week, secured R124.58 billion in investment pledges.
The claimed outcome is R29.58 billion, or about 31 percent, above the R95 billion pledge target stated in the City's 12 October pre-conference announcement. These figures describe commitments announced at the conference, not capital already invested, financing already drawn or municipal expenditure.
The City says 18 identifiable projects linked to eThekwini represent R38.538 billion of the total, with implementation planned within 36 months. Its 16 October statement does not name the 18 projects, identify the investors, show financing status or provide project-level approval and delivery milestones.
The same statement separately cites a R217 billion municipal catalytic-development portfolio, including a R25 billion Sibaya Precinct and R35 billion Durban Bay and Point Waterfront development. It also says Cornubia investment exceeds R2.1 billion, with about 300 construction jobs created and close to 2,000 future jobs anticipated. The City does not state that those portfolio values form part of the R124.58 billion conference pledges, so Civic Ledger records them separately and does not add them together.
No procurement references or public-funding commitments were disclosed in the release. The next verifiable record should be a project-level pledge register showing investor, location, value, funding status, approvals, implementation deadline and subsequent capital deployed.
What it means
The announced pledge total exceeded the conference target, but the economic result cannot yet be audited from the public record. A named project register and periodic implementation reporting are needed to distinguish firm investment from headline commitments.
